Hypertextual Ultrastructures: Movement and Containment in Texts and Hypertexts
Computer-mediated hypertextuality has generally been compared to print-based textuality in terms of readers’ experiences: Hypertexts blur boundaries among texts and between readers and writers, creating a sense of free-form exploration and ongoing creation by which any reader’s path through a text may differ from the path taken by any other reader. However, the surface-level experience of hypertextuality as formless and unbounded is created by a deep structure which is not normally presented to readers and which, like the ultrastructure of living cells, rigidly defines texts’ nature and function.
