Eliot's classic Old Possum s Book of Practical Cats, the musical was written in 1981. Gillian Lynne (the shows choreographer) co-directed the show along with fellow director Trevor Nunn. John Napier designed the original sets and costumes. It was produced by Cameron Mackintosh. The show first opened in the West End in 1981 at the New London Theatre followed by its Broadway debut in 1982 at the Winter Garden Theatre.
