Gürhan Özcan, İstanbul Erkek Lisesi'nde ortaokul (1964-1968), Ankara Fen Lisesi'nde lise eğitimini (1968-1971) tamamladı. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi'ni bitirerek tıp doktoru olduktan (1971-1977) sonra aynı fakültenin Plastik ve Rekonstrüktif Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı'nda 1977-1983 yıllarında altı yıllık asistanlık eğitimini tamamlayarak plastik cerrahi uzmanı oldu. 1988 yılında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Teksas eyaleti Houston kenti Baylor Tıp Fakültesi Plastik Cerrahi Bölümü'nde iki yıl araştırma görevlisi, bir yıl asistan profesör olarak toplam üç yıl çalıştı. Çok sayıda bilimsel çalışma tamamladı. İki kez Amerikan Plastik Cerrahi Derneği'nin araştırma ödülünü kazandı. 1990 yılında plastik cerrahi doçentlik sınavını verdi ve 1991 yılında Türkiye'ye dönerek Hacettepe Tıp Fakültesi Plastik Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı'nda öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmaya başladı. 1995 yılında Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi'nde Plastik Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı kurucu başkanı oldu. 1996 yılında bu bölümün profesör kadrosuna atandıktan sonra, üniversitedeki görevinden 1998 yılında ayrılarak serbest hekim olarak çalışmaya başladı. Ağırlıklı olarak estetik cerrahi alanında ameliyat yapmaktadır; en sık yaptığı ameliyatlardan bazıları burun, liposuction (yağ alma) , yüz ve boyun germe, göz kapağı, meme ve karın ameliyatlarıdır.
